JANUARY 2010

From the Chairman

Dear ASIS Members,

You have elected an outstanding 2010 executive committee; each member bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience to the chapter membership.

We are also fortunate to have an incredibly talented team of industry professionals who have stepped up to assume key roles on the various committees.

Some of you have been members for many years and both ASIS, and I appreciate your continued contributions and support of the chapter, ASIS, and chapter events over the years. Some of you have been less active in recent years, but I am hoping that our team will find ways to entice you to become active again.

For the newer members, I am not convinced that ASIS or the chapter has communicated the many outstanding opportunities that your membership provides. ASIS International is all about Security and has an unlimited amount of resources available. During the course of 2010, our committees will be showcasing some of those resources. Are you interested in certification (CPP, PSP, PCI)? You should be as these certifications are generally held by some of the best the security industry has to offer. We have some experienced members who will work with you to help you get that certification in 2010!

Our law enforcement appreciation (or LEAN) event is second to none. In 2010, we will be making it even better with a surprise or two that will make our next event the most memorable ever! We will be reaching out to the armed forces, private security, and private investigations and recognizing the best of the best and those whose contributions to our community deserve special recognition.

We will be expanding from Dallas to make it more convenient for more of you to attend meetings. Find it hard to get away for a chapter meeting? We will be introducing the first in a series "virtual meetings" that will permit you to gain knowledge; get updated on chapter business and activities all while multi-tasking from the privacy of your office. We will have a happy hour or two and appreciate your help in hosting a meeting or helping us identify new locations to hold meetings.

Money is tight everywhere, and your budget requires you to make priorities, yet you made the decision to maintain your ASIS membership. The goal of this chapter is to show you value and a good return on your investment of time and expense. I need your input on what we do well and where we fall short.

Since your time is valuable, let me share a couple of final thoughts. Dallas will be hosting the ASIS Annual Seminar and Exhibits in 2010 and our team will be working with ASIS to make our visitors feel welcome. Our chapter has some committees in need of leadership and participation. Can you commit some time, next year to serve the chapter?

We all have so much to look forward to in 2010, and it is my intention to make your time spent with ASIS and the chapter a positive and worthwhile experience.

- Charles Baxter, PSP, Chapter Chairman

January Meeting

About three dozen members met Jan. 21 at 11:30 at the Mei Mei restaurant in Dallas. Meetings are now held on the third Thursday of the month.

Mike Susong, CPP, spoke on "Electronic Crime Issues Facing Corporate America,” telling the group that cyber crime is now a global business with hackers in China rapidly catching up to their counterparts in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union .

Before the program, new Chairman Charles Baxter, PSP, discussed how the chapter would use the website as a living newsletter and that new efforts are being made to educate members on the value of certification; and to provide mentors to help them in the process.
